STC Astro-Multispectra Clip Filter for Canon APS-C bodies is a novel light pollution filter designed by STC Optics with transmission characteristics designed by professional astronomer and renowned astrophotographer Dr. Wei-Hao Wang.

Highlights

  • Significantly reduce light pollution from artificial lighting in city
  • Allows the use of much wider lens when compared with front mounted filter
  • Easily install or remove for Canon APS-C cameras
  • Natural colour representation
  • High transmission for astronomical bodies emission
  • Easy to clean thanks to anti-static and greaseproof coating
  • Co-developed by STC and Dr. Wei-Hao Wang, a professional astronomer and renowned astrophotographer

The beautiful M42 Great Orion Nebula on the cover was captured by Mr. Szeto under the serious light pollution in central business district area located in Hong Kong, which is a well known severely light polluted city in the world. With the effective light pollution suppression through this newly launched STC filter, the details instantly pop out against the background.

Features

  • Mounting and removing the Clip-Filter is quick and easy.
  • Allows the use of SLR lenses as short as 14mm on full frame bodies
  • Significantly reduces color shift that might occur at the peripheral areas of wide angle lens thanks to close distance between the filter and sensor
  • Specially designed clip-shaped structure allows the filter to be secured firmly inside the camera body with the lens attached. Therefore, the focal plane is fixed ensuring accurate and consistent focus.
  • The clip structure is made of A2 stainless steel which is virtually non-magnetic and suitable for low temperature use.
  • STC Astro-MS Clip filter can significantly reduce the transmission of artificial lighting in the city, and enhance the transmission of important nebula emission lines such as Hα, Hβ, OIII and SII. (Hα=656.3 nm, Hβ=486.1 nm, OIII=495.9 & 500.7 nm, SII=672.4 nm)
  • Coated with the use of the IBAD (Ion beam-assisted deposition) technology on Schott® B270 optical 1mm glass, working for higher durability and easily cleaning, and preventing aging variation in optical spectral characteristics due to temperature and humidity change
  • High-quality double-sided NANO Anti-smudge coating provides excellent performance on waterproof and grease-proof capability
  • Considering the different optical lens properties of all kinds of brands, it is normal for spherical and coma aberration to occur on part of the fisheye lens, super wide angle lens and wide angle lens.
  • 12 months original manufacturer warranty*

Compatible Canon bodies

All Canon APS-C EOS cameras are compatible except EOS-M. Below is a list showing some of the models,

  • EOS 7D Mark II
  • EOS 80D
  • EOS 70D
  • EOS 760D / Rebel T6s / 8000D
  • EOS 750D / Rebel T6i / Kiss X8i
  • EOS 700D / Rebel T5i / Kiss X7i
  • EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 / Kiss X7
  • EOS 350D/400D/450D/500D/550D/600D/650D
  • EOS-M to EF lens adapter

Placing the light pollution filter closer to the sensor reduces color shift that may occur at the peripheral areas of the image if front screw-in lens filter is used. STC recommends using STC Astro MS Clip Filter for Canon-APS-C with SLR lenses of focal length 14mm or longer, and avoiding directly taking pictures to strong artificial light which may cause slight flare on image.

STC Astro-M Transmission Characteristics

stc-astro-multispectra-spectrum.jpg

  1. Natural colour representation by selectively blocking out UV light below 410nm, sky glow in between 620nm and 640nm and infrared light beyond 680nm
  2. High transmission for astronomical bodies emission at Hα=656.3 nm, Hβ=486.1 nm, OIII=495.9 & 500.7 nm, SII=672.4 nm and slightly passing yellow-orangish emission at 605nm.

Installation Procedure

A. Remove the lens from the camera.

B. Insert the Astro-MS clip filter into the camera.

C. Press the clip filter firmly into place

D. Attach the camera lens and start shooting!

STC Technologies

nikonclipastro-06.jpg

STC utilises ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) to solidly bind the coatings onto Schott B270 glass, the very same glass used in Zeiss lenses. Such technique enhances the light transmission and also durability of the 160 layers of coating deposited to produce the advanced filter characteristics shown above.

With patented Ultra Layer® technology, both surfaces of Astro-Multispectra are coated with Anti-Smudge nano-coating to prevent dust and water from settling on the filter surface. Dew will not form and your filter is always clean. If necessary, it's effortless to clean.

Warranty

6 months warranty covering defects due to manufacturing and workmanship

*Extended to 12 months by registering on STC website.
